Puppy, etc.
Posted by nopa in Geek Out, I like dags, Web Design on September 24th, 2008
So, we got the puppy and it’s been interesting. He’s a little guy and, therefore, doesn’t know what the hell to do when he has to pee. So he just goes where ever he feels like. Fortunately, we haven’t had too many accidents, and I’m pretty sure his bladder can only handling something like, 2 tablespoons of whiz. Beyond that, the last few days have been really nice with him. He’s been keeping his big brother tired, and his big brother keeps trying to eat his leg, so it’s a nice symbiotic relationship. When they get tired, they’ve been falling asleep apart, except this morning Toby got up, went into Magglio’s crate and cuddled right up next to him (click on the picture to the left for a bigger version). It was possibly the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.
It’s really weird having two dogs here in the casa. First of all, I’m really used to Magglio the Cog. Or maybe he’s more of a Dat. He’s really independent. Doesn’t like to be touched most of the time, and he knows how to climb like a badass. Now we have Mr. Toblerone and Magg’s is all like, “OH MY GOSH PUPPY!!!” And Toby’s all “HOLY CRAP! WHAT’S THAT SMELL? and what’s that smell? wait, what about that smell? OHMYGOSHANOTHERSMELL!!!” then he sleeps for a hour. What’s really weird is when they start playing. Magglio is so used to playing with dogs 4-10 times his size (no, really. His Man-Crush Gus is 100lbs and he’s weighing in at an astounding 10lbs) that I’m nervous that he’ll just eat Toby. And Toby is so new to this mortal coil that I’m afraid he’ll not understand that he’s playing and eat Maggs. It’s a delicate ballance they need to strike, and so far they’re doing it well. But, as the parent, I still get nervous when I start hearing the growling and yelping. Also: when watching TV and getting into what’s happening to Sylar and Peter Petrelli when the coffee table suddenly jumps because 15lbs of dog decided that it was time to play “Let’s See How Homoerotic We Can Make Our Wrestling” (the answer is: extremely — they’ve ended up in a adorable puppy 69 more times than I can count), it’s just plain distracting.
Anyways, in addition to the +42 cute modifier we just got to our house, I realize that with the big camera, two dogs, a honeymoon and lots of house projects I’m going to want to document, I’m going to need a better system for this website that will allow me to not worry about images ever. Something that does automatic thumbnails would be great, and I can’t decide if I’m going to make Movable Type fit my needs, or if I’m going to head on over to something like Wordpress. Or something else. I may have to set up multiple project blogs to see what I like. Yup. It’s that time again. Jon’s gonna work on the website.

Redesign
Posted by nopa in Geek Out, Web Design on July 22nd, 2008
I’ve been talking redesign of this place for ages, since before the actual design I had made went ker-puffle, and damnit. It’s getting to be about that time. Sure, it’ll take me ages (far longer than makes any kind of sense), and sure it’ll be a horrible horrible process for me (but not a “bad” horrible, just a “repetitive” and “make me want to pull out my hair in frustration when that element is 3 pixels too far to the left in Firefox, 2 pixels to the right in Safari and looks like a lemon pooping a bottle of olive oil in IE. I actually enjoy fixing that stuff. I just go crazy for a while and suddenly, when the black-out is over, everything is happy and shiny again), but it’ll be worth it in the end. Why? BECAUSE SELECTING WHICH CATEGORY TO USE IN LITTLE-MISS-MOVABLETYPE (Little Miss Movable Type, please don’t think that by my following statements I love you any less, or want to stop making mad blog-love all over you every time I want to ramble on in a public forum) SUCKS HARDER THAN A HOOVER HOOKED INTO A 220 LINE!!!! And yes, the comment selection in a CMS is worth taking a hard, and serious, look at. In fact, it’s so serious, I’m looking at moving my site off Movable Type. Which is all kinds of crazy because I’ve been using it for over four years now. I started using it pre-2.0, and I love it. Except I hate it. And now with comments all sorts of bassackward, it’s time to look long and hard at a few alternatives.
That being said. The redesign is right on schedule right now for a third quarter 2010 release. I’ll keep you posted.

Layout… … …
Posted by nopa in Geek Out, Web Design on February 2nd, 2008
I swore sometime last year that I would have a new layout for the site sometime last year. Which… I suppose I did by blowing up my old database and loosing the countless hours that had gone into the various layouts that I had working on the old version of the site. Therefore, I have officially started work on the latest version of the site. I have no idea if this particular layout is going to be what I settle on, so… whatever. I’m posting the working version I have now. No title graphic, just a simple nasty grey (or is it gray? I can never remember), menu on the side. I need to find better colors than what I have, and the date isn’t formatted well… but I like it off to the side like it is. Anyways, not that you probably care, but what’chu think? Lemme know here if’n you will. Suggestions would be awesome, criticisms would also be awesome. Word.
Also: I was thinking about changing the name of the site to: Quo Vadimus Needs a Name Change. Thoughts?

Redesigning
Posted by nopa in Geek Out, Web Design on June 12th, 2007
I’m working on a couple of projects right now when it comes to web design. I kind of want to work on learning how to do some actual, real world, professional graphic design and layout type stuff, but I’m not sure where to start with that, or how long it will take, so I’m going to leave that to another day. Rather, I’m going to try to work out a site for B before the end of the decade. I feel that I may have not been as forthcoming as I should have been when I first told her I’d work on a site for her. For those of you longtime readers… well.. you know that it can take me many many moons to finish working on a design. Once it’s done, it’s usually pretty cool though.
The first thing I was working on for B was, admittedly, the last thing I really should have been. Because I suck at Photoshop. Which may or may not have to do with the fact that I don’t have a copy of Photoshop. Soon, hopefully, I’ll be able to get one. My hope is by sometime next year. Of course, I also want a few other pieces of software… … “Which ones?” you ask? Well… I’ll tell you.
- Coda
- Coda: Best web dev program I think I’ve ever used. It does everything I used to do with three programs, a Dirt Devil, four cupcakes and pixie dust all in one program with an easy to use interface and some graphic goodies. It’s neat.
- Parallels
- Why? I’m a geek and I have a Intel based Mac. Really, why else would I want it? Mac OS X, XP, Ubuntu running at once? Yes please
That’s really it right now. Yeah, I know. Boring. I’m boring. But wait… if you’re reading this that means that you’ve probably read the post I’m going to post right after this which shows how boring can be fun!

Too Much Effort
Posted by nopa in Geek Out, Web Design on April 30th, 2007
So, I’m back in the midwest where people are more like… “Uh… I want a cheeseburger” than they are in Texas (where it’s more like, “HOLY SHIT!!! I LOVE CHEESEBURGERS!!! LET’S SING DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS TO OUR CHEESEBURGER!!!!!”). It’s nice to be somewhere a little less… passionate (and I’m really not knocking Texas, I love that they care… its just a bit overwhelming to not be able to go anywhere in a state and not be able to see a map of the state…). And before I get into the nitty gritty of what I did on the trip, I’m going to tell you what I’m doing right now. I’m working on a redesign of the website. It’s gonna happen this year, and I don’t really care if it happens sooner or later, but it’s going to happen. I figure if I start working on in now, the last day of April, I have a fairly good chance of getting it done by my birthday… … I mean, maybe not quite 50%, but a fairly good chance none the less… heh.
If you got any ideas for what I should do with this thing, lemme know… in the comments.

Still a Geek
Posted by nopa in Geek Out, Web Design on October 8th, 2005
I’ve gotten category templates working now… So if you click on the various category links at the end of each post, you’ll get taken to a catalog of my rantings on the subject. There is some weirdness, and I need to figure it out. It’s very confusing to me. I did something, though I honestly don’t remember what, that made the LessSimple layout a little more centered, rather than off to the left. Only, for the category archives, it’s still to the left. Also, I’ve decided that I liked it the way that it was, and I don’t remember what it was, exactly, that I changed. This leaves me frustrated.
Yes. I really do spend my days off work sitting around thinking about crap like this. I am, really, that cool.
I want to go out. I think I might. I don’t know, I can’t decide. Either way, I think I’m going to take a shower. It sounds glorious.
-Jon
P.S. UPDATE: I’m going to get the individual archives working tomorrow if I have time while I’m doing laundry before I leave town. If I can get them working, then comments will be active again on the site and every one of you can tell me how borring I’ve been for the last few months.
So Chic
Posted by nopa in Geek Out, Web Design on October 8th, 2005
The restoration of my site is almost complete. And, it will be better. Faster. I have the technology.
By technology, you should of course be reading, “time… lots and lots of time.” I’ve been playing with this thing for damn near 2 hours this morning. I’ve got the dynamic pages to work. I got the quotes to work on all the pages without using PHP or an SSI. The comments will be coming on line sometime today or tomorrow if all goes well, and category pages may be showing up as well.
This that are broken still… well, comments. Some of the CSS is still not up to snuff as far as I’m concerned, but mostly on the layout that I don’t think anyone ever looks at. The “more” link up in the quote box doesn’t lead to anything. And I started a new layout a while ago, and it’s not done. Maybe it’ll be good, maybe it’ll be not so good… But I want to finish that too.
All in all it’s been a productive morning. So… \/\/007. 1 4m 3L173. 1 w1LL pwn y0u, 5u(k45.
Yes. I realize I’m a geek.
UPDATE: I also got a feed working for the site for those of you who use Bloglines or some other aggrigator. I only have the Atom feed going, but it should be enough. That is all.

Le Geek

So, I got the dynamic pages working for my site. Which will make rebuilding way easier. It did, however, break the quotes stuff… which I’ve decided I’m going to fix. I’m going to make the quotes a part of this site. When they are new, I think they’ll have to show up two places, but that’s OK. It’ll all be integrated into this site, and that’ll make my life so much easier. I’ll be able to have a page with all of them, dynamically generated. And… and… well, yeah. That’s it. It’ll be nice for me, and you folks probably wont ever notice the change, except for being able to see the old quotes that have been up here.
In other news I saw Serenity again last night. I enjoyed it more the second time… but I think I was judging it more on its own merits rather than comparing it to the show. Which is good. I realized how much I want to see the rest of these peoples stories, and that’s a definite plus for the movie.

One Step Closer
Posted by nopa in Web Design on October 2nd, 2005
I’m one bit closer to getting comments back online. I’m not quite there, and — frankly — I’m not going to get there today. I’m on vaccation. So sue me… you still can’t comment… but soon my friends, soon.

P.S. Saw Serenity last night… post to come.
This Place I Call Home

Alright. I’ve had a few complaints, and I’ve been irritated by this for too long. I’m going to fix the comments on this site. I’m not sure how. And I’m certainly not sure when. But I’m going to make you, the reader, this promise: I will, at some indeterminate point in the future have comments that work be they in a pop-up window or a dynamically generated archive page… … … Ok, I’m going to re-phrase my promise in a way that people might actually care about: I promise that the next thing I fix on my website will be comments and you wont need a 40 page instruction manual to figure them out. Take that Internet Gremlins. That’s right. You can break my comments now — but some day, some way I will exorcise you from my website.
Speaking of gremlins, I want to do some recording again. And I want to do recording with a good setup, with good songs, with some other musicians that are good. I will do this. I promise you, I will do this. Of course, I don’t know when or how. But… that’s gonna be the next thing that comes after the “Great Comments Fixing of ‘05.’
In other news, it’s not quite 1:00am, and I’m about to pass out. Hurray for a job that gets me to bed at a quasi-resonable hour.
